So what is the laptop lifestyle? The laptop lifestyle is the freedom of earning an income away from a 9-5 setting. You can work from home, but the laptop lifestyle offers you the freedom of being able to work from anywhere; you can take your work with you wherever you go. All you need is a laptop.
Sure you could do work from home for an employer, but what I want to talk about is the work you’re doing as a freelancer, contractor, or entrepreneur.

Having dipped my feet into the laptop lifestyle for three years and recently made the shift to a 100% laptop lifestyle, I can’t imagine ever going back to a 9-5 gig at an office. I am a virtual student support manager, a virtual blog/content assistant, freelance proofreader, and a blogger. There are so many benefits to doing all of this from anywhere.
Cut the clock strings
One of my favorite things about the laptop lifestyle is “punching in” when I want to. During the summer, I pretty much woke up whenever I wanted to. Now that school is back in session, I’m able to get my daughter ready for school, send her to school, enjoy breakfast with my boys, and then “punch in” when I’m ready. There’s no eyeing the clock counting down the minutes until “work” starts.
If emergencies pop up, I’m able to start work later and don’t have to worry about getting reprimanded for that. There is nothing like the freedom of working when you can.
My office is right next to our family room, and I love being able to work while keeping an eye on my kids. It’s so easy to pause work and play with them or pop in a movie and watch it together.
With the freedom of working from home, the needs of my children never come in second. If they’re hungry or thirsty, I’m able to fulfill that right away. If my baby is getting fussy and needs a nap, I’m able to put him down for a nap and enjoy the peace and quiet for a few hours.
It’s such a blessing to earn a living while raising my kids. I don’t have to worry about someone else raising them and missing out on significant milestones.

More Opportunity to Grow
My laptop lifestyle has offered so many fun and exciting opportunities. Every day I’m learning something new and finding out more about myself and what I’m capable of.
When I was an HR rep at an office job, the everyday tasks became second nature and were no longer challenging. As much as I loved the organization and the people, I was no longer excited about the job and what more it could bring.
I love being challenged and presented with new tasks that allow me to think outside the box. It’s so gratifying when you’re able to utilize your full potential.
Learning new skills does wonder for your self-confidence and provides you with so much professional growth. A year ago, I had no idea how to put together a website, no idea what an email list was or what email marketing was. I had no idea how a blog even worked!
No more long commutes
I used to drive an hour total each day to my HR job. And winters in Wisconsin can be brutal, so that commute was much longer from December through February. Now my commute to work consists of a few feet to my work area or going down a flight of stairs to my dedicated office. (I have two work spaces.) Less driving also means less chance of car trouble or accidents.
In addition, no more long commutes have allowed us to cut our gasoline expense in half!
No more business casual
As I write this, I’m in my pajamas. I no longer have to spend money on button-up shirts, skirts, trousers, etc. I can pretty much live in yoga pants and t-shirts. Of course, if I’m in a video call meeting, I will put on something nice, but the wardrobe expense is near non-existent — which means saving more money!
This also means I don’t have to mess with putting on makeup every day. It’s clean, fresh-faced all the way.
Messy hair, don’t care.
Happiness means different things to different people. For me, happiness is being able to do something I love, getting paid for it, and that it doesn’t take me away from my family. The freedom of this lifestyle has made me so much happier and carefree. I’m less stressed and so excited for what the future has to bring.
It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, I was worried about where my career path would take me, what to do with childcare if we decided to expand our family… it just seemed like what I wanted from life I could not achieve in my current circumstances.
A brighter future
If you’re currently in a situation less than ideal, I encourage you to look into the alternatives. Perhaps the laptop lifestyle could be a great fit for you. This could mean pursuing a side hustle you’ve been thinking about or other online opportunities that may be a good fit for you. The most wonderful thing is that we’re not helpless to our situation.
Don’t like where you are right now? Do something about it. It’s never too late to change things for the better. Imagine where you could be a year from now if you took action today!
