The decisions we make every day help to shape the direction of our life. Small decisions may not have quite the impact, but there are critical decisions that serve as the turning point in your life.
Often, when we’re presented with something new and uncertain, it’s fear that holds us back. We’re afraid that we’re making a wrong decision and will just fail.
Over a year ago, a critical decision I made completely changed the direction of my life and my thoughts about earning an income and getting the most from life.
In 2016, when my husband showed me a Facebook ad from a self-paced, online course from Proofread Anywhere (PA) called Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™, I had no idea where it would take me.
PA taught me real skills that clients were in search of — the primary skill being proofreading. I had always been a word nerd with an eye for spelling and grammatical errors, but PA helped to refine my skills to a level I never considered possible.
Not only can I tell you what a dependent and independent clause is, but my writing has improved immensely. I can construct and proofread material with ease — which isn’t to say I don’t rely on my reference books anymore because I still do on occasion.
Just because you have these incredible skills does not mean the work and money will come calling. So I have learned through the course to step out of my comfort zone and market my skills to do what I love and help my clients.
If you’re not confident in yourself and what you can do, then how can you expect others to be?

After graduating from the rigorous course, I reevaluated my potential. I had kept my potential in a box never realizing that I was capable of so much more. I had the power to change how I would make a living.
It was like all my life I had been viewing how to make an income through limiting glasses, and it wasn’t until I graduated from PA, started earning an income, handled being a mom boss, that I could take off those glasses and see the world I had been missing.
The work-at-home arena is full of so many opportunities that help to highlight the skills you already possess or could be capable of possessing.
How had I never considered pursuing this and creating a life away from the supposed norm?
Where would I be if I had realized early on what being-my-own-boss freedom was like?
I started to see that I was not a prisoner to a brick and mortar employer, the 9-5 life, being away from my children, working toward the completion of someone else’s goals. I was capable of using my knowledge and skills to create something for myself and share it with others.
And you’re now reading this blog post as a result of the entrepreneurial flame that PA helped to ignite.
It’s so exciting to have an idea and be able to carry it out. I dreamt of working from the comforts of my home whenever I wanted, billing my clients, and getting paid. And that dream came true.
Learning is everything
Whether we realize it or not, every day is about learning.
You go online because you want to know something you didn’t know awhile ago, you check your phone because you don’t want to miss out on any new info, you bought that self-help book because it’s offering knowledge you’re not aware of, and so on.
When we invest in a course, we are investing in the transformation it offers us.
When I invested in Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™, I was investing in the transformation to being a skilled freelance transcript proofreader capable of starting and running my own business.
When we stop learning, we stop growing. To be successful, we have to be open to new ideas and realize we don’t know everything.
I am a strong believer in always investing in one’s self. When we are open to learning, it boosts our confidence and self-esteem. It challenges our mind and gives way to a more satisfying life. We can’t believe that we know everything there is to know.
We must realize we’re lifelong students and that learning and education didn’t stop with that diploma or degree.
Believe in yourself
We are all capable of so much more. And sometimes it takes one decision and event to open our eyes to the limitless possibilities of having a more fulfilled life.
You are not a prisoner of your circumstances. If you’re feeling stuck, I encourage you to research, keep an open mind, and step out of your comfort zone to changing your current way of life. Be open to new opportunities waiting around the corner. It’s okay to make your own path without knowing where you’ll end up.
Your only regret may be that you didn’t start sooner. Where will you be a year from now if you decide right now that you want and are capable of more?
